tech leaders call for pause in ‘out of control’ AI race

Numerous prominent figures in the technology industry have called for a halt to the training of the most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems for a period of at least six months due to the significant risks to society and humanity that they pose.

Elon Musk was one of the many individuals, including professors and researchers, who signed the letter, which was released by the Future of Life Institute, a non-profit organization supported by Musk.

The letter was published shortly after OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, an upgraded version of the AI technology that serves as the foundation for the popular chatbot tool, ChatGPT. During early tests and a demonstration by the company, the technology was capable of drafting legal documents, passing standardized exams, and creating a functional website from a hand-drawn sketch.
